For this exhibition, Iliana takes the imagery of colonial botanical expeditions to the American continent as a starting point to reflect on the movement of plants across borders. It explores the colonial wonder and fascination with the plants encountered and the simultaneous drive to categorise and control. As an alternative to the prevailing essentialising language used to describe plants as ‘native’, ‘foreign’ or ‘invasive’ this piece underscores their complex histories of migration and how plants have roots (and routes) that span continents.
