A Scream of Swifts*
Laser cut and hand-printed tissue.
Approx. 50 x140cm
Carolyn is showing work that extends beyond the print frame for Intersect.
Her scroll installation piece A Scream of Swifts was created for the Stratford unitarian gallery
space. The work draws attention to the loss of over 60% of swift numbers in the UK, in just
one human generation. Carolyn uses traditional linocut printmaking for the swifts, ghost
printing the swirling birds until they fade away. The lower section of the tissue scroll is laser
cut, to perforate or remove, reflecting on absence and our impact on intersecting species.
Composite I and II are made from hand-printed paper, held together with thread. These
works are part of her wider project on fragile structures, exploring perceptions of space and
strength.
