Through a combination of analogue and digital photography, drawing, printmaking and writing, Phil has been re-imagining and recreating a set of magic lantern slides for which he has only the empty boxes in which they used to be stored and their list of contents.

Making the work has taken him on walks in and around London: Along the New River starting at Stansted St. Margarets; down the Lea valley from Chingford to Stratford; from Kempton Park to Hampton; along the riverside at Kew; around the perimeter of the golf course that now sits atop the underground reservoir at Honor Oak; and into the London Archives to view some of the original slides and record details only available through physical examination.

For this most recent iteration of the work, he has used the images from the slides in an intersection between analogue and digital media in a video installation which animates his hand drawn slides in response to live social media posts about the polluted state of our rivers and seas.
